After a horrific accident on the Cape Coast-Takoradi highway, twelve (12) people have been confirmed dead and several others are in critical condition.

It follows a head-on collision at Eduegyei between a Toyota Hiace bus with the registration number WR 1347-17 and a DAF Truck with the registration number GM 2570-12.

In a press conference, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), DoIII Abdul Wasiu Hudu, said the GNFS received a distress call from a police officer around 3:50 p.m. on Wednesday, and the rescue team was quickly dispatched to the scene from Elmina Fire Station.

He added the team arrived at the scene a few minutes later and extricated the victims with the aim of searching for survivors but only one lady was rescued alive.
According to DOIII Wasiu Hudu, GNFS personnel did not meet the driver of the DAF Truck at the scene and are unaware of his whereabouts.

The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital morgue pending autopsy, while the injured are being treated.

According to an eyewitness, the DAF Truck traveling from Takoradi to Cape Coast was overtaking a vehicle ahead of it in a low visibility area due to smoke from a burning bush when it collided with the Toyota Hiace bus traveling from Kumasi to Takoradi.
