The former President of Congo, Yhombi-Opango is reported to have died of coronavirus xorlali.com reports.
He died at age 81 from coronavirus even though he was sick before contracting the virus.
Yhombi-Opango was born in 1939 and rose to power after the assassination of President Marien Ngouabi.
He led Congo-Brazzaville from 1977 until he was toppled in 1979 by the country’s current leader, Denis Sassou Nguesso.
Yhombi-Opango was jailed from 1987 to 1990 after he was accused of taking part in a coup plot against Sassou Nguesso.
He was however released a few months before the 1991 National Conference that introduced multi-party politics in the country.
