Former President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been declared the winner of Ghana’s 2024 presidential election. The announcement was made by the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, on Monday, December 9, 2024.
According to official results released by the EC, Mr. Mahama garnered a total of 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of the valid votes cast. His closest contender, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who stood on the ticket of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), secured 4,657,304 votes, representing 41.61%.
The total valid votes for the election stood at 11,191,422, while rejected ballots amounted to 239,109, bringing the total votes cast to 11,430,531. The voter turnout was recorded at 60.9% across 267 constituencies.
NDC Secures Majority in Parliament
In addition to the presidency, the NDC has also gained enough parliamentary seats to secure a clear majority in the next Parliament. However, some parliamentary seats remain unresolved due to disagreements during collation.
Post-Election Violence and Arrests
The election, which began peacefully on Saturday morning, was later marred by pockets of violence in certain areas. Reports indicate that the post-election disturbances have claimed three lives, with several others injured. The Ghana Police Service has confirmed the arrest of 89 individuals for various election-related offences.
Political Leaders Call for Calm
Both the NDC and NPP leadership have called on their supporters to maintain peace. Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the NDC, urged their members to refrain from engaging in violence.
Similarly, the National Youth Organizer of the NPP, Salam Mohammed Mustapha, condemned the actions of some NDC supporters and called on the police to act swiftly to prevent further disturbances.
EC Chairperson’s Address
Speaking at the declaration, Jean Mensa emphasized the need for Ghanaians to respect the outcome of the election and work towards national unity. “This election is a testament to Ghana’s democratic values. We urge all citizens to embrace peace and support the newly elected leaders as they work towards the development of our nation,” she stated.
The 2024 general elections mark the third victory for John Dramani Mahama, who previously served as president from 2012 to 2016. His victory is being celebrated by NDC supporters across the country, while NPP members are reflecting on their defeat.
As Ghanaians look forward to the next administration, the focus remains on ensuring a peaceful transition and addressing the challenges that emerged during the electoral process.
