Four of Africa’s nine slots for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have officially been taken. Ahead of the final qualifying fixtures, four North African powerhouses Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, and Algeria — have all booked their places in next year’s global tournament.
In Group B, qualification remains in the hands of Senegal. The Teranga Lions sit comfortably on 21 points and will seal their World Cup spot if they defeat Mauritania at home on Tuesday.
Group C is shaping up to be one of the tightest battles, with Benin Republic, South Africa, and Nigeria still in contention. Benin need at least a draw against Nigeria, while South Africa must beat Rwanda. Nigeria, on the other hand, must win their match against Benin and hope South Africa drop points to stand any chance.
In Group D, Cape Verde Islands missed a golden chance to qualify after a 3-3 draw with Libya on Wednesday. They’ll get another opportunity if they beat Eswatini at home on Monday. Their qualification could also be confirmed if Cameroon fail to win their next fixture.
Over in Group F, Ivory Coast (23 points) will secure their place with a home win against Kenya (12 points). However, a slip-up could see Gabon (22 points) leapfrog them if they defeat Burundi (10 points).
Meanwhile, Ghana are all but through as Group I leaders after a dominant 5-0 victory over the Central African Republic. The Black Stars currently hold 22 points — three more than Madagascar — and need just a draw at home to Comoros on Sunday to make it official. With a superior goal difference, Ghana’s ticket to the 2026 World Cup is practically sealed.
Africa’s road to the 2026 World Cup is heating up, and as the final fixtures approach, football fans across the continent are eagerly waiting to see which nations will complete the lineup for North America.
