This recognition stems from the role he played occupying the position of Senior Policy Advisor to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and the Lead Trade Negotiator for the Ethiopian government.

He worked as the Senior Program Manager at the World Bank Group in Kenya for seven years before gaining an appointment to work for Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. He also worked as the Operations Officer within the Trade and Competitiveness Global Practice of the World Bank Group.

He is the founding CEO of Ethiopian Investment Holdings (EIH); a state-owned investment company. Mamo Mihretu currently works as the Governor of the Ethiopian Central Bank following his recent appointment in 2023 by the Prime Minister, which other politicians have opposed.
