Bunso Eco Park history
The Arboretum is situated on a 40-acre forest reserve that belongs to the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council. In the early 20th century, the traditional council leased the reserve to a mining company for surface mining, but in 1917, it was given to another company by the name of the African Products Department for rubber and cocoa plantations.
In 1935, two British people who had acquired the park after the company left it built a guest house. Currently residing in the guesthouse is the Vice Chancellor of the University College of Agriculture and Environmental Studies, a facility established by the Okyehene, Amoatia Ofori Opanin II.
The building was acquired by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)’s Plant Genetic Resource and Research Institute in 1946, and it has been under its management ever since.
One of the rare tree species found in the forest reserve is Garcinia Kola, also referred to as Twepea, and it is believed to have health benefits. In many tropical areas, garcinia kola is said to be used to treat infectious diseases. It also supposedly has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiviral properties.
The Okure tree, which is primarily used for dugout boats, and the Alpha and Omega trees, which are used for the regional sponge (sapowie), are other tropical tree species that can be found at the centre.
