The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has once again declared his unwavering support for the passage of the LGBTQ+ bill, highlighting its significance in preserving Ghana’s cultural values and democratic integrity.

Addressing a Ghanaian community in Côte d’Ivoire on January 21 as part of his diplomatic mission to strengthen Ghana-Ivory Coast relations, Speaker Bagbin reiterated his firm stance against same-sex relationships. “I would rather prefer to die than live in a society where such unions are accepted,” he stated passionately.

The Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, commonly referred to as the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, has sparked intense national and international debate. While advocates argue it is essential to uphold Ghana’s moral and cultural heritage, critics claim it infringes on basic human rights.

Despite the controversy, Bagbin is resolute. “I’m determined to see this through quickly, hoping for passage this year. To me, it’s a matter of upholding moral principles, and I’m willing to take a strong stance, even if it comes at great personal cost,” he affirmed during the open forum.

In addition to addressing the LGBTQ+ bill, the Speaker emphasized his commitment to holding the government accountable for its promises. Among his key priorities is ensuring the establishment of a women’s bank to provide low-interest credit and monitoring the size of the cabinet to prevent exceeding the 60-minister limit.

“We will hold the executive accountable for their promises. Effective governance requires constant vigilance, not just voting and then disengaging. We mean business, and we expect the government to do the same,” Bagbin declared.

His remarks have reignited discussions about governance, cultural preservation, and the future of the LGBTQ+ bill in Ghana. As the year unfolds, all eyes remain on Parliament to see how these issues will shape Ghana’s legislative and cultural landscape.
