To mark this year’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Atlantic Lithium Limited, which is set to develop Ghana’s first lithium mine, has organised a breast cancer sensitisation programme and free medical screening, in collaboration with the Mfantseman Municipal Health Directorate, Assembly Members, and the Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG-Cape Coast, Central Region) for women across its host communities.

The five-day programme, which was held under the theme “Screen Today, Live Tomorrow”, commenced on Thursday, 23 October 2025, at the Anokyi Community Centre. The programme continued to Krofu, Ewoyaa and Mankessim in the Central Region of Ghana, before finishing on Wednesday, 29 October 2025, at Saltpond.
The programme aimed to raise awareness of breast cancer, particularly among women in rural and less developed areas, to encourage early detection to save lives, and to empower women with the knowledge and confidence to take charge of their health. It formed part of Atlantic Lithium’s broader corporate social responsibility and sustainability initiatives, which prioritise community health. A total of 468 women, of ages ranging from 13 to 94, participated in a breast cancer awareness session and a medical screening. While designed primarily for women, 46 men also attended, benefitting from the free medical screening and taking the opportunity to learn more about breast cancer.

The sensitisation and screening events drew attendance from community members, who expressed their gratefulness for the provision of free medical services in their locality. They also gained a deeper understanding about the disease, its causes, and preventive measures. The active participation and engagement at the various screening centres called for continued public health education. They equally learnt how to carry out regular self-examinations to detect any abnormalities.
The programme began with an awareness session on breast cancer, followed by medical screening, including breast examinations conducted by a medical team from the Saltpond Municipal Hospital and PPAG-Cape Coast.

Dr. Millicent Aning-Agyei, Atlantic Lithium’s Community Relations and Social Performance Manager, speaking at the event, emphasised the importance of the theme for the breast cancer sensitisation programme. She stated that the initiative served as a reminder for women to undergo regular screening to know their status, as early detection helps improve treatment options and survival outcomes.
“We aim to break or minimise the myths surrounding breast cancer and to educate women about its causes and preventive measures. I was impressed by the youth’s receptiveness and enthusiasm to participate in the programme. Women will learn to perform self-examination and detect any abnormalities early. We are pleased to provide this opportunity, which saw participation from women of all ages as well as a number of men”, she added.

She further emphasised the company’s commitment to giving back to its host communities, stating that initiatives such as this are crucial for building strong, healthy, and well-informed communities.
The Municipal Disease Control Officer for Mfantseman, Mr. Solomon Oware Mensah, encouraged everyone, especially women, to learn more about breast cancer and expressed his appreciation to Atlantic Lithium for supporting this worthy cause. He emphasised the importance of early detection to help prevent complications in the future.
