Ghana’s Black Queens have advanced to the semifinals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a tense 4 to 2 penalty shootout win against Algeria in Berkane, Morocco.

After a goalless draw across 120 minutes of regulation and extra time, goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan became the standout performer of the night. She saved two penalties during the shootout, guiding Ghana to a well-earned place in the final four.

This marks the Black Queens’ first WAFCON semifinal appearance since 2016. Under the leadership of head coach Kim Lars Björkegren, the team has shown resilience and determination throughout the competition, recovering from a challenging group stage to mount a strong campaign.

Path to the Semifinals

Ghana entered the quarterfinals after finishing second in their group. A defeat to South Africa and a draw with Mali put the team under pressure, but a dominant 4 to 1 win over Tanzania secured their place in the knockout stages.
