In a landmark decision, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has officially approved visa-free entry to Ghana for all African nationals.
The executive approval, granted on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, positions Ghana alongside Rwanda, Seychelles, The Gambia, and Benin as one of the few African countries to welcome all African passport holders without visa restrictions.
This groundbreaking move fulfills President Akufo-Addo’s promise made during the Africa Prosperity Dialogues (APD 2024) in January. The initiative aims to boost free movement of people, goods, and services across the continent, strengthening economic ties and accelerating the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
The policy is expected to take effect before the end of President Akufo-Addo’s term on January 6, 2025.
Speaking at APD 2024, President Akufo-Addo reaffirmed his dedication to the initiative, emphasizing its importance for Africa’s growth.
“Many of you had to acquire a visa to attend this event,” he noted. “The government of Ghana is committed to ensuring visa-free travel for all Africans, and the process to implement this policy is already underway.”
This bold step signals Ghana’s leadership in driving pan-African unity and economic integration, paving the way for stronger intra-African trade and collaboration.
