Dr Mahamudu Bawumia wins NPP presidential primaries, becomes flagbearer for 2028 elections

Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has been elected as the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2028 general elections, following the party’s presidential primary held on Saturday, January 31, 2026.

Dr Bawumia emerged winner after securing 56.48 per cent of the total valid votes cast, defeating four other contenders in the closely watched internal contest.

According to the official results announced by the party’s Electoral Committee, Dr Bawumia polled 110,643 votes, winning the election outright without the need for a run-off.

  • Dr Bryan Acheampong – 18.53%
  • Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum – 1.02%

The election was conducted nationwide, with over 200,000 accredited delegates voting at various polling centres across the country.

Calls for unity

In his victory speech, Dr Bawumia expressed gratitude to party delegates for the confidence reposed in him and called for unity within the party ahead of the 2028 elections.

He urged supporters of all aspirants to come together to rebuild and strengthen the party, stressing that unity would be key to the NPP’s return to power.

Support from defeated aspirants

All four defeated aspirants have since congratulated Dr Bawumia and pledged their support towards a united front as the party prepares for the next general elections.

Dr Bawumia’s victory positions him as the NPP’s candidate to face the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2028 presidential race.
