Between 1992 to 1995, O’Neill was a member of Nacional’s first team in Uruguay’s Primera División. This marked the beginning of his professional career.
During his debut season, at the age of 18, his team won the league. In 1996, he joined Serie A club Cagliari and afterwards moved to Italy. He was one of several Uruguayans that joined the team through agent Paco Casal.
