Fabian O’Neill, a former Uruguayan international midfielder described by Zinedine Zidane as “the most talented player” he had ever seen, died on Sunday after a long battle with alcoholism. Between 1992 to 1995, O’Neill was a member of Nacional’s first team in Uruguay’s Primera División. This marked the beginning of his professional career.
During his debut season, at the age of 18, his team won the league. In 1996, he joined Serie A club Cagliari and afterwards moved to Italy. He was one of several Uruguayans that joined the team through agent Paco Casal.

In 1997, the squad was relegated to Serie B, but was promoted again in 1998. In a match against Salernitana in 1999, he hit Gennaro Gattuso with three nutmegs.

Chronic liver disease was the cause of death for Fabian O’Neill. In June 2020, O’Neill was brought to the hospital for cirrhosis. He was advised that if he didn’t drink for a year, he may have a liver transplant and enjoy a long life.

O’Neill died on December 25, 2022, at a Montevideo hospital where he was undergoing emergency care for bleeding from a longstanding liver ailment. The death of Fabian O’Neill has left the community in mourning.
