The Ghana Education Service (GES) has postponed the reopening date for single-track senior high schools (SHSs) from March 29, 2025, to April 23, 2025.

This was announced in a letter dated March 27, 2025, sent to all regional education directors. The letter, signed by Prince C. Agyeman-Duah on behalf of the Acting Director-General of GES, instructed directors to share this update with school heads, parents, and students.

Why the Date Was Changed

Initially, students were supposed to return on March 29, but the Eid-Ul-Fitr holidays on March 30 and 31 led to a shift to April 1. However, after further review, GES decided to extend it to April 23 to avoid disruptions.

The Ministry of the Interior explained that since Eid-Ul-Fitr falls on Sunday, March 30, the President has declared Monday, March 31, and Tuesday, April 1, as public holidays.

GES Explains the Decision

GES spokesperson Cassandra Twum-Ampofo said reopening before multiple holidays would cause unnecessary travel for students.

“There would be holidays on Monday and Tuesday, followed by an Easter break. It wouldn’t be safe for students to keep traveling back and forth,” she said.

She assured that final-year students preparing for WASSCE will not be affected, as extra instructional hours will be added to cover the lost time.

The change applies only to single-track SHSs. Double-track students will follow their original calendar.
