A District Court in Accra has sentenced 21-year-old Mohammed Huzeinu to 100 days in prison for invading the pitch during Ghana’s World Cup qualifier against Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, March 21, 2025.
Huzeinu’s unexpected intrusion disrupted the match and could lead to financial repercussions for the Ghana Football Association (GFA). International football governing bodies typically impose fines of at least $10,000 for such security breaches.
The GFA has strongly condemned pitch invasions, stressing the importance of discipline and adherence to match-day regulations to maintain order at stadiums.
Security Concerns Grow After Fifth Pitch Invasion in Five Years
The chaotic incident occurred when Huzeinu ran onto the field in an apparent attempt to hug Ghanaian striker Antoine Semenyo. Security personnel quickly intervened, removing him from the pitch and handing him over to the Ministries Police Station.
This latest incident marks the fifth pitch invasion at a Black Stars match in the last five years, raising concerns about stadium security. Similar incidents took place during Ghana’s AFCON qualifiers against Angola and South Africa, leading to financial penalties for the country.
Authorities hope that Huzeinu’s sentencing will serve as a warning to fans, emphasizing the need to maintain order and protect Ghana’s reputation in international football.
