History Of The Jubilee House

The House has previously been known as The Flagstaff House. It is the presidential palace, where the president of Ghana reside and also work.

The Flagstaff House was first constructed and used for administrative purpose by the British colonial government. It was built on the site of a building which was constructed by the Kwame Nkrumah government.

Flagstaff House was dismantled and replaced by “Golden Jubilee House” by an Indian business. This was under the government of John Kufour in 2007, to commemorate Ghana’s 50th year of independence.

The Flagstaff House was restored and renamed by the government of John Agyekum Kufour in November 2008, when construction was around 70%–80% complete.

In January 2009, President John Evans Mills’ government refused to take office in the new building, and the newly elected president renamed the structure back to Flagstaff House. He also changed the sign in front of the building to its original name.

President Evans also claimed that the previous government had not used a Legislative Instrument to effect the change as required by law.
