Clayton Ruby, a Canadian lawyer and activist specializing in constitutional, criminal, and civil rights law, has died.

Ruby, who was born in Toronto, Canada on February 6, 1942, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from York University in 1963.

He received his Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Toronto in 1969 and was admitted to the bar that same year.

In 1973, he received his Master of Laws from the University of California, Berkeley.

From 1976 to 2008, Ruby was a partner in the law firm Ruby & Edwardh with Marlys Edwardh.

After 2007, he joined the law firm of Ruby Shiller Chan Hasan in Toronto, Ontario.

Ruby’s death was confirmed on Twitter by his law firm, Ruby Shiller Enenajor DiGiuseppe.

“Clay was a dedicated advocate for human rights, a champion of the underdog and a loving friend. Our thoughts are with his family and our entire firm mourns the loss of our leader and mentor,” the firm tweeted.
