“I fought hard for this dream, I gave my all”: Cristiano Ronaldo speaks after world Cup exit

Cristiano Ronaldo has insisted that he will never abandon Portugal after leaving the field in tears after their World Cup elimination.

Portugal’s journey in Qatar came to an end after a 1-0 defeat to Morocco in the quarter-finals, with Ronaldo once again being left out of Fernando Santos’ starting XI.

While he was on for the majority of the second half, the 37-year-old failed to inspire a comeback, instead walking straight down the tunnel after the final whistle.

The 37-year-old appeared distraught as he was led to the changing room by a member of Portugal’s support crew, tears streaming down his cheeks.

Portugal’s World Cup was overshadowed by rumors about their best ever player, who had his Manchester United contract cancelled after an explosive interview with Piers Morgan in which he slammed the club and stated he would ‘never respect’ manager Erik ten Hag.

However, in an emotive Instagram statement, the 37-year-old says his loyalty has never been called into question, implying he will continue to play at the international level for as long as he is able.

In his words:

“Winning a World Cup for Portugal was the biggest and most ambitious dream of my career. Fortunately, I won many titles of international dimension, including for Portugal, but putting the name of our country on the highest level in the world was my biggest dream.”

“I fought for it. I fought hard for this dream. In the 5 presences that I scored in World Cups over 16 years, always alongside great players and supported by millions of Portuguese people, I gave my all. I left everything on the field. I never turned my face to the fight and I never gave up on that dream.”

“Unfortunately, yesterday the dream ended. It is not worth reacting hot. I just want everyone to know that much has been said, much has been written, much has been speculated, but my dedication to Portugal has not changed for an instant. I was always one more person fighting for everyone’s goal and I would never turn my back on my teammates and my country.”
