Who is Akira Takarada?

Takarada was born in Korea during the Japanese occupation and resided in Harbin, China for a while. His father worked for the South Manchurian Railway as an engineer. He remained in Harbin after the war, and he spoke Mandarin Chinese and English.

Takarada and his family moved to Allied-occupied Japan in 1948. In April 1953, he joined Toho as part of their “New Face” initiative.

He made his film debut in And Then the Liberty Bell Rings, a biopic of educator Fukuzawa Yukichi, in which he played a minor role.

His major break came when he was cast in the original Godzilla as navy diver Hideto Ogata (1954). His good looks and personable, intellectual character made him a popular actor at Toho.

Godzilla vs. Mothra was his return to the franchise in 1992, and he returned again in Godzilla: Final Wars (2004).

Half Human (1955), The Last War (1961), King Kong Escapes (1967), and Latitude Zero (1968) are some of the other Toho science-fiction/special-effects films in which he appeared (1969).

For its new Teigeki theatre in 1970, Toho prepared a musical production of Gone with the Wind with Broadway composer-lyricist Harold Rome. Takarada’s character, Scarlett, was originally supposed to play Rhett Butler.

However, he was unable to participate in this stage production due to injuries received in a filming accident in which he fell from a bulldozer.

Takarada made a guest appearance at the fan convention G-Fest XVII in 2010, and again in July 2012 at G-Fest XIX.
