John Clark Gable with the full name William John Clark Gable. He was born February 1, 1901 in Cadiz, Ohio, U.S. and died on November 16, 1960, Los Angeles, California. However, he was born to William Henry Gable, an oil-well driller, and his mother Adeline Hershelman.
He grew up in Ohio and reportedly dropped out of high school at age 16.
John Clark Gable’s Career
Gable was inspired to become an actor after witnessing the play The Bird of Paradise when he was 17, but he did not begin acting until he was 21 years old. However, he received his $300 inheritance from a Hershelman trust.
Before migrating to the Pacific Northwest, he worked in the oil fields of Oklahoma with his father, wildcatting and removing muck. However, Gable was encourage to return to acting by a local stage actor Earle Larimore.
Gable moved back to Portland where he obtained a day job with Pacific Telephone and started receiving dramatic lessons in the evening. He later traveled to Hollywood in 1924 with his manager Dillion. However, he changed his stage name from W.C. Gable to Clark Gable.
Gable later appeared as an extra in such silent films as Erich von Stroheim’s The Merry Widow (1925), The Plastic Age (1925), starring Clara Bow, and Forbidden Paradise (1924), starring Pola Negri.
In 1930, after his impressive appearance as the seething and desperate character Killer Mears in the Los Angeles stage production of The Last Mile, Gable was offered a contract with Pathe Pictures.

Gable met his wife Carole Lombard on the set of No Man of Her Own ( 1932), though they did not begin dating for several years. The couple then married in 1939. His wife Carole Lombard was an actress but died in a plane crash while returning home from a war bond rally in 1942.
