Ghana’s former President John Dramani Mahama has achieved a remarkable political comeback, winning the nation’s presidential election after Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia conceded defeat on Sunday.
In a press conference from his residence, Bawumia announced that he had called Mahama to offer his congratulations. He also confirmed that Mahama’s National Democratic Congress (NDC) had secured victory in the parliamentary elections.
“Let me say that the data from our own internal collation of the election results indicate that former President John Dramani Mahama has won the presidential election decisively,” Bawumia declared. “The NDC has also won the parliamentary election. Even though we await final collation of a number of seats, I believe ultimately these will not change the outcome.”
Bawumia’s concession came before the official declaration of results by Ghana’s Electoral Commission, a move he said was aimed at reducing tensions. Reports of minor scuffles had emerged from several local constituency centers where results were still being collated.
“I am making this concession speech before the official announcement by the Electoral Commission to avoid further tension and preserve the peace of our country,” Bawumia stated.
He emphasized the importance of maintaining Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of peace and democracy in Africa, particularly in the eyes of the global investor community.
“The people have voted for change at this time, and we respect that decision with all humility,” he concluded.
