Lynne Cheney is an American novelist and former talk show personality who served as the United States’ second lady from 2001 until 2009. From 1986 to 1993, Lynne Cheney was Chair of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Lynne Cheney graduated from Natrona County High School and went on to get a Bachelor of Arts in English literature from Colorado College. Lynne has a Master of Arts degree from the University of Colorado in Boulder and a PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in nineteenth-century British literature.
Cheney established the American Council of Trustees and Alumni after serving as chairwoman of the National Endowment for the Humanities in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
She sat on the board of directors of Lockheed Corporation and co-hosted CNN’s “Crossfire” from 1995 to 1998. She works closely with the American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research and is a member of the Reader’s Digest Association’s board of directors.
Cheney became second lady after George W. Bush chose her husband, Halliburton CEO Dick Cheney, as his running partner and won the election. She was an outspoken opponent of media violence, notably that seen in filthy lyrics, violent rap, and explicit video games, and served in government from 2001 to 2009.
“Blue Skies, No Fences: A Memoir of Childhood and Family,” “When Washington Crossed the Delaware: A Wintertime Story for Young Patriots,” and “American Memory: A Report on the Humanities in the Nation’s Public Schools” are among her many books. The couple’s two daughters, Elizabeth and Mary, have been married since 1964. Lynne and Dick have both publicly voiced their support for homosexual marriage, owing to the fact that one of their daughters is a lesbian.
