Matteo Messina Denaro Biography
Matteo Messina Denaro (born April 26, 1962), often known as Diabolik, is a Castelvetrano-based Sicilian Mafia boss. Following the arrests of Bernardo Provenzano on 11 April 2006 and Salvatore Lo Piccolo in November 2007, he was regarded as one of the new leaders of the Sicilian mafia. Denaro, the son of a Mafia boss, rose to national prominence on April 12, 2001, when the magazine L’Espresso featured him on the cover with the headline: Ecco il nuovo capo della Mafia (“Here is the new Mafia boss”).
Matteo Messina Denaro was born in Castelvetrano, Sicily, in the province of Trapani. Don Ciccio’s father, Francesco Messina Denaro, was the capo mandamento of Castelvetrano. Matteo learnt to shoot a gun when he was 14 years old.
His father began as a campiere (armed guard) for the D’Al family, affluent landowners who were among the Banco Sicula’s founders. He was appointed fattore (estate overseer) of the D’Al land holdings. They gave Matteo Messina Denaro a substantial land in the Zangara (Castelvetrano) area. The true new owner, however, was Salvatore Riina, with whom Messina Denaro was affiliated.
Antonio D’Al Sr. had to resign from the Banco Sicula board in 1983 because he was on the list of Licio Gelli’s secret freemason lodge Propaganda Due (P2). In 1996, his son Antonio D’Al Jr. was elected senator for Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia party, and in April 2001, he was appointed undersecretary at the Ministry of the Interior, the institution in charge of combating organized crime. Giacomo D’Al, his cousin, is a counsellor at the Banca Commerciale Italiana (Comit) in Milan, which bought the Banca Sicula in 1991. Salvatore Messina Denaro, Matteo’s brother, was jailed in November 1998 and continued to work for Comit.
Messina Denaro is frequently portrayed as a ruthless playboy mafioso and womanizer, driving a high-end Porsche sports car and donning a Rolex Daytona watch, Ray Ban sunglasses, and Giorgio Armani and Versace clothing. He enjoys computer games and is rumored to be the father of an adulterous child, which is unusual in the Mafia’s traditional society. Messina Denaro is known for his fast lifestyle and is accused of murdering a Sicilian hotel owner who accused him of taking young girls to bed. As so, he stands in stark contrast to established Mafia bosses like Salvatore Riina and Bernardo Provenzano, who profess to uphold conservative family values.
