Matthew Forbes Pottinger, born in 1973, is a former journalist and a United States Marine Corps officer. From September 22, 2019, to January 7, 2021, he served as the United States’ deputy national security advisor.
He attended Milton Academy and was a classmate and childhood pal of John Avlon. Pottinger holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chinese studies from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and speaks Mandarin fluently.
