How old was Maury Wills when he died?

According to a news release, he died Monday night at his home in Sedona, Arizona. The reason for death, however, has not been disclosed. Maurice Morning Wills was born on October 2, 1932 which makes him 89 years of age as of 2022.

Maury Wills signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers after graduating from high school in 1950. He spent eight years with them in the lower leagues.

The Detroit Tigers paid $35,000 for his contract prior to the 1959 season, but after spring training, they returned him to the Dodgers because they didn’t believe he was worth that much. He had also played for Pittsburgh and Montreal before returning to the Dodgers from 1969 through 1972.

Wills hit.281 with 2,134 hits and 586 steals in 1,942 games over his 14-year career. Wills stole 97 bases on September 23, 1962, beating Ty Cobb’s previous single-season record. He was the first player in history to steal more than 100 bases in a single season.

As a ploy, he was awarded credit for resurrecting the stolen base. Even if he didn’t try to steal, his speed made him a constant threat on the basepaths, keeping pitchers on their toes. When he wasn’t on base, he paid close attention to pitchers and their pickoff techniques.
