The Detroit Tigers paid $35,000 for his contract prior to the 1959 season, but after spring training, they returned him to the Dodgers because they didn’t believe he was worth that much. He had also played for Pittsburgh and Montreal before returning to the Dodgers from 1969 through 1972.
