The heroic actions of Samir Zitouni, a long-serving LNER worker, have been praised across the UK after he bravely intervened during a mass stabbing attack on a train bound for London King’s Cross.
The 48-year-old, affectionately known as Sam, is currently fighting for his life after stepping in to stop a knife-wielding attacker who targeted passengers on the 6:25pm LNER service from Doncaster to London on Saturday evening.

Samir Zitouni’s Brave Intervention Praised by LNER
According to the British Transport Police (BTP), CCTV footage from the train revealed that Samir Zitouni’s bravery was “nothing short of heroic” and that his quick action “undoubtedly saved people’s lives.”
LNER confirmed that Samir has been a valued member of staff for over 20 years, working as a Customer Experience Host on board its trains.

David Horne, Managing Director at LNER, shared his admiration for Samir’s courageous act, saying:
“In a moment of crisis, Sam did not hesitate to step forward and protect those around him. His actions were incredibly brave, and we are so proud of him and all our colleagues who acted with such courage that evening. Our thoughts and prayers remain with Sam and his family, and we wish him a full and speedy recovery.”
Family of Samir Zitouni Thank the Public for Their Support
The family of Samir Zitouni expressed deep gratitude for the overwhelming support they’ve received from the public, describing him as a “hero” not just to others, but within their own family as well.
In a statement, they said:
“We have been deeply touched by the outpouring of love and kindness shown to Sam, and by the many well wishes for his recovery. The care provided by the hospital and the support from his colleagues at LNER has been incredible. We are immensely proud of Sam and his courage. The police called him a hero on Saturday evening, but to us – he’s always been a hero.”
Police Investigation and Suspect Identified
Police have since charged Anthony Williams, 32, of no fixed address, with 11 counts of attempted murder following the LNER train stabbing attack and another earlier assault at a London station.
Williams is also charged with possession of a bladed article and attempted murder in connection with a knife attack at Pontoon Dock station in the early hours of November 1, where another victim sustained facial injuries.
The suspect appeared before Peterborough Magistrates’ Court on Monday and has been remanded in custody.
According to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, officers are also investigating whether the same suspect was involved in further offences in Cambridgeshire, including incidents in which a teenager was stabbed.
