A US Marine transport plane carrying five Marines went down in a remote part of Southern California on Wednesday afternoon. According to a federal source, four of the five were killed. There was no word on the fifth’s fate.

Maj. Mason Englehart confirmed to CBS News that the MV-22 Osprey of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing crashed in a desert area near Glamis, California. The accident happened around 12:25 p.m. local time.

Englehart said the plane was carrying five Marines, but he couldn’t immediately confirm the total number of people on board, including the crew, or whether there were any fatalities or injuries.

The US Marine Corps tweeted Wednesday night that it was “awaiting confirmation” on the five Marines’ “status.” “We ask for the public’s patience as we work diligently with first responders and the unit involved to identify what occurred this afternoon”.

Installation According to Naval Air Facility El Centro, the Federal Fire Department and the Imperial County Fire Department responded to the crash, and “contrary to initial reports, there was no nuclear material on board the aircraft.”

Glamis is located in rural Imperial County, about 50 miles north of the border between the United States and Mexico. The 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing is based at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, while the Osprey is based at Marine Corps Air Station Camp Pendleton, according to Englehart.

Both are in the neighboring county of San Diego. The cause of the crash was unknown. According to the Marines, the Osprey is a tiltrotor aircraft used to transport troops and supplies. It can fly like a plane and take off and land like a helicopter.
