Minority Members of Parliament have taken their protest to the gates of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra, sitting on the bare floor in a dramatic show of resistance against what they describe as unjust and excessive bail conditions imposed on NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
The MPs vowed to spend the night at EOCO’s premises until the GH¢50 million bail condition — which reportedly requires property of equal value — is reviewed and fulfilled.
This bold move follows their earlier walkout from parliamentary proceedings on Thursday, where Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin condemned EOCO’s actions as “capricious and biased.”
“I support accountability, but accountability must follow the rule of law,” Afenyo-Markin told Parliament. “Today it is Wontumi. Tomorrow it could be you, Mr. Speaker.”
The Minority Leader questioned the logic of demanding such a hefty bail condition from someone who, according to reports, is currently receiving medical care.
“You are demanding 50 million worth of property from a man still in the hospital? Where is he going to get that from?” he asked. “We don’t have 50 million in property. We are going to sleep there with him.”
According to the protesting MPs, this demonstration sends a clear message to EOCO and all state institutions: uphold the law and ensure justice is applied fairly and without political bias.
