Members of Parliament from the Minority caucus have staged a dramatic walkout during parliamentary proceedings in protest of the recent arrest of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Chairman Wontumi was arrested on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on charges of causing financial loss to the state. Although bail was granted at GH¢50 million, he remains in EOCO custody pending fulfillment of the bail conditions.
The Minority described the move as a clear case of political persecution and called for a more transparent legal process. Their walkout briefly disrupted proceedings in Parliament, though the Majority side continued with the day’s agenda.
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin addressed the media after the walkout, criticizing EOCO for what he termed “punitive” bail conditions.
“EOCO is using onerous bail conditions to punish Chairman Wontumi,” he said, arguing that the terms are intentionally harsh and unjust.
While EOCO has yet to release a full statement regarding the case, investigations into the alleged financial loss are ongoing.
