The National Deputy Director of the Traders and Artisans Network (NDN), Bright Botchway, has expressed confidence that John Mahama is the strongest candidate to win the 2024 elections, in contrast to Dr. Bawumia, whom he criticized as untrustworthy, comparing him to slippers while likening Mahama to Italian shoes.
On July 16, 2024, Botchway appeared on the popular political evening show “Simpieso” on Atinka FM, hosted by Owoahene Nana Acheampong. The show, known for its engaging debates, invited Mr. Botchway to discuss current political issues. However, the NPP representative did not show up, leaving Botchway to present his views without opposition.
When asked about a recent suggestion by a former Deputy General Secretary of the NDC for a debate between H.E. John Dramani Mahama and Dr. Bawumia, Botchway rejected the idea. He argued that Mahama should not debate Bawumia. Instead, he suggested that Bawumia should be more available to the media for questioning, as Mahama has been. This, he argued, would allow Ghanaians to judge the candidates based on their responses and policies.
Botchway criticized Bawumia’s performance, stating that he doesn’t deserve to share a platform with Mahama. He praised Mahama’s integrity, proven track record, and significant achievements, which he said make him a credible leader. In contrast, he claimed Bawumia lacks credibility and is seeking a debate to enhance his standing.
Botchway emphasized that the focus should be on individual policy proposals rather than debates, as this would provide a clearer picture of each candidate’s vision for Ghana.
In his closing remarks, Botchway made a striking analogy, stating that “comparing John Mahama and Bawumia is like comparing Italian shoes to local slippers.” This comparison highlighted his belief that Bawumia is not in the same league as Mahama and should not be given the same platform. He reiterated that Ghanaians deserve to hear substantive policies from each candidate rather than a debate that could artificially boost Bawumia’s credibility.
