A sad day in Ghana as top government officials including Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed have reportedly died in a tragic helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region.

On Wednesday morning August 6 2025, a military helicopter carrying eight people, including high-level government officials, crashed in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region. The news has shocked the nation and left many in deep sorrow.

Who Was on the Helicopter?

According to early reports, the helicopter was a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 and was heading to Obuasi when it went off the radar shortly after takeoff.

The helicopter had:

  • Three crew members

The passengers included:

  • Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence
  • Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation

  • Samuel Aboagye, a former Member of Parliament
  • Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC and Presidential staffer

The crew members were:

  • Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala
  • Flying Officer Mane-Twum Ampadu
  • Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah

What Happened?

The aircraft lost contact with the military shortly after taking off. Emergency teams quickly responded to the crash site. Sadly, graphic images and videos shared by Citi News showed the charred remains of the victims.

Officials have not yet released a full list of those confirmed dead or injured, but several trusted sources report that all passengers and crew members died on the spot.

Ashanti Regional Minister Rushes to Scene

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, was attending an anti-galamsey event when the news broke. He abandoned the programme and rushed straight to the crash site after hearing about the tragedy.

Ghana Armed Forces Responds

In a short statement, the Ghana Armed Forces confirmed the crash and said that efforts are underway to assess the wreckage and determine the full impact of the crash.

The cause of the crash is still unknown, and investigations are currently ongoing.

This Is Not the First Time

This tragic accident comes a year after another helicopter incident. On March 19 2024, a military helicopter crash-landed near Bonsukrom in the Western Region. Thankfully, no lives were lost in that crash.

But this latest incident has claimed the lives of some of the country’s most important leaders and leaves a huge gap in Ghana’s leadership.
