Paul Sorvino, a well-known American actor, opera singer, businessman, writer, and sculptor, has died. He was best known for his roles as Paulie Cicero (based on Paul Vario) in the 1990 gangster film Goodfellas and NYPD Sergeant Phil Cerreta on the second season of the TV series Law & Order.

He also played Juliet’s father in Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 film Romeo + Juliet, as well as guest appearances as the father of Bruce Willis’ character in Moonlighting and the father of Jeff Garlin’s character in The Goldbergs. He also appeared in A Touch of Class, Reds, The Rocketeer, The Cooler, and Nixon as a supporting actor (as Henry Kissinger).

Although he was usually cast in supporting roles in dramatic films such as Bloodbrothers, he also had comedic roles such as his turn as a bombastic Southern evangelist in Carl Reiner’s Oh, God!. Sorvino was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actor for his performance in the 1972 play That Championship Season, and he went on to star in film and television adaptations. He was the father of Mira and Michael Sorvino, both actors. Paul Sorvino died on July 25, 2022, at the age of 83, at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida.

Paul Sorvino was born on April 13, 1939, in New York, New York, to Ford Sorvino and Marietta Sorvino. His father was a foreman in a robe factory and was an Italian (Neapolitan) immigrant. His mother, who was born in Connecticut of Italian (Molisan) descent, was a homemaker who also taught piano. Paul Sorvino’s only sibling is William Sorvino.
