Agüero began his professional career as a member of the Argentine Independiente. He became the youngest player to play in the Argentine Primera División on his debut on July 5, 2003, at the age of 15 years and 35 days, beating Diego Maradona’s 1976 record.

For a cost of €23 million, he transferred to Atlético Madrid in La Liga in 2006.
