Ghana’s former seat of government, the Osu Castle, is set to undergo a major transformation into a top-tier tourist destination, according to President John Dramani Mahama.
Delivering his State of the Nation Address (SONA) on February 27, 2025, Mahama outlined his administration’s ambitious vision to redevelop the historic Osu Castle and its surroundings.
“We will develop the Osu Castle, the former seat of government, and the area around it as a tourist attraction. It will have a pedestrian precinct with an arts and crafts market, jewelry and gold markets. This approximate 22-acre land will become a destination for tourism,” he announced.
‘Black Star Experience’ to Boost Ghana’s Tourism Industry
Beyond the Osu Castle project, President Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to positioning Ghana as the gateway to Africa for the global diaspora through the ‘Black Star Experience’ initiative.
This initiative aims to showcase Ghana’s rich cultural, historical, and artistic heritage in collaboration with the private sector, diplomatic missions, and government agencies.
“Our aim is to position the Black Star Experience as a uniquely Ghanaian tourism brand. The Pan-African Month will be a part of the Black Star Experience,” Mahama stated.
Ghana’s Strategic Advantage as a Global Business and Tourism Hub
Mahama emphasized Ghana’s peaceful and democratic environment, highlighting its potential to host international summits, business conventions, and high-profile global events.
“We must capitalize on this unique advantage to maximize our benefits and strengthen our reputation as the Centre of the World,” he stressed.
With these strategic tourism and cultural initiatives, Mahama’s government is set on reinventing Ghana’s historical landmarks and reinforcing its status as a leading destination in Africa.
