Taylor Swift Endorses Kamala Harris for President After Debate with Donald Trump

Pop superstar Taylor Swift has publicly endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president, following a heated debate between Harris, the Democratic nominee, and her Republican opponent, former President Donald Trump. The debate took place on Tuesday night, September 10, with Swift making her endorsement official in an Instagram post the next morning.

Swift, who had faced criticism online for not voicing her political stance earlier, expressed her support for Harris just 60 days before the election. Voting has already begun in many states.

“Like many of you, I watched the debate tonight,” Swift wrote in her post. “I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them. I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos.”

Her post included a photo of Swift with her cat, taken from her TIME cover photoshoot, and was signed off with “Childless Cat Lady,” a pointed reference to comments made by Republican vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance about women who choose not to have children.

Swift also praised Harris for choosing Minn. Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate, applauding Walz’s long-standing support of LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and reproductive rights.

This endorsement comes after months of speculation about Swift’s political stance. She previously endorsed Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in the 2020 election and has been vocal in her criticism of Donald Trump, particularly around issues such as the defunding of the U.S. Postal Service and police violence during racial justice protests.

Swift also took the opportunity to debunk AI-generated posts circulated by Trump supporters last month, which falsely suggested that she endorsed Trump. “It really conjured up my fears around AI, and the dangers of spreading misinformation,” she said, adding that the best way to fight misinformation is with transparency.

Amid recent criticism of Swift for her associations, including being spotted with Brittany Mahomes, the wife of suspected Trump supporter NFL player Patrick Mahomes, at the U.S. Open, Swift reaffirmed her commitment to Harris, stating, “I’ve done my research, and I’ve made my choice. Your research is all yours to do, and the choice is yours to make.”
