Ghana’s Black Queens finished third at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after winning on penalties against South Africa on Friday, July 25, 2025.

The game ended 1-1 after full time, and Ghana won 4-3 in the penalty shootout to take home the bronze medal. This is the first medal for the Black Queens since 2016, and just like that year, they beat South Africa again to win it.

How the Match Went

Ghana’s coach, Kim Lars Bjorkegren, made one change to his team, bringing in Alice Kusi instead of Princess Marfo.

Ghana had chances to score early. Doris Boaduwaa missed a clear chance in the first 15 minutes. Alice Kusi also came close after a corner from Portia Boakye.

Grace Asantewaa forced a good save from South Africa’s goalkeeper Andile Dlamini.

Right before half-time, Ghana’s goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan made a big mistake, and Nonhlanhla Mthandi scored for South Africa.

Ghana Fights Back

In the second half, Ghana played better and created more chances. Evelyn Badu had two good headers but couldn’t score. Finally, in the 68th minute, Alice Kusi scored after a great cross from Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah, making it 1-1.

Evelyn Badu almost gave Ghana the win, but her shot hit the crossbar.

Penalty Shootout

The game went to penalties. Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah missed her kick, but South Africa missed two penalties, and Ghana won 4-3 in the shootout.

What’s Next?

Nigeria will play Morocco in the final on Saturday, July 26, as they try to win their 10th WAFCON title.

This win is a big moment for the Black Queens and Ghana football. They fought hard and brought home a medal after nine years.
