John Zaritsky, an Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker, has died. He died on March 30, 2022, at the age of 79.

Zaritsky, whose legal name was John Norman Zaritsky, was a Canadian documentary filmmaker who won an Academy Award for his film Just Another Missing Kid in 1982.

The film was about an Ottawa adolescent who went missing in Nebraska. It looked into the disappearance of a 19-year-old Ottawa man in Nebraska, leaving his family to persuade uninterested local and federal authorities that their son wasn’t on a runway, but had just forgotten to contact home before learning of his fate.

He also directed Do You Really Want to Know?, a documentary about families considering genetic testing for Huntington’s disease, and Leave Them Laughing, a comedy about a performer who vowed to outlive Lou Gehrig’s disease.

He directed Men Don’t Cry: Prostate Cancer Stories, which he shot just before learning of his own prostate cancer diagnosis.

Zaritsky died at the Vancouver General Hospital of heart failure, according to a family statement. He is survived by his wife Annie Clutton and two children called  Errin and Bern Lally.
