Who was Lauro Fred Cavazos? Lauro Fred Cavazos Jr. was an educator and politician in the United States.

He was the first Hispanic to serve in the United States Cabinet as Secretary of Education. Cavazos Jr. was born in Kingsville, Texas, to Lauro F. Cavazos Sr. and Tomasa Quintanilla on January 4, 1927.

Texas Tech University awarded him a B.A. and M.A. in zoology, and Iowa State University (ISU) in Ames, Iowa awarded him a Ph.D. in physiology in 1954.
Cavazos served as Secretary of Education as a Democrat between August 1988 and December 1990, under the Republican Reagan and George H. W. Bush administrations, but was forced to retire in December 1990 after an investigation into unlawful usage of frequent flyer miles.

He returned to the faculty of Tufts University after resigning as Secretary of Education, where he has since served as Professor of Public Health and Family Medicine.
