Starting January 1, 2025, WhatsApp will no longer support Android devices running KitKat OS or older. This update targets phones released 9 to 10 years ago. Meanwhile, iPhone users will have until May 2025 to upgrade their devices.
Why the Change?
Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, explained that the decision is part of an effort to enhance security and app functionality. As technology evolves, older devices lack the capacity to support new features or provide adequate data protection. Without security updates, these devices are at greater risk of cyberattacks. Meta aims to ensure that WhatsApp runs smoothly only on devices that support the latest software.
Phones Losing WhatsApp Support from January 2025
The following Android phones will no longer support WhatsApp starting January 1, 2025:
Samsung Galaxy S3
Motorola Moto G (1st Gen)
HTC One X & HTC One X+
Sony Xperia Z
LG Optimus G
LG Nexus 4
Sony Xperia T, V, and SP
iPhone Users Have Until May 2025
While Android users face an immediate deadline, iPhone users must upgrade by May 5, 2025. After this date, WhatsApp will cease to function on iPhones running iOS 15.1 or lower. This includes:
iPhone 5s
iPhone 6
iPhone 6 Plus
To continue using WhatsApp, users of these models must either update their iOS software or switch to newer devices.
Meta’s Focus on Security
Meta continues to prioritize security and innovation. Older phones simply can not keep up with the app’s evolving capabilities. WhatsApp has periodically phased out support for outdated devices in line with their lifecycle to ensure smooth operation across newer models.
Stay updated to avoid disruptions and continue enjoying seamless messaging with WhatsApp’s latest features.
