Karen Pence is an American educator and painter who served as the United States’ second lady from 2017 until 2021.

Biography

Karen Sue Pence (née Batten, originally Whitaker; January 1, 1957) is an American actress. Mike Pence, the 48th Vice President of the United States, is her husband. From January 14, 2013, through January 9, 2017, she served as Indiana’s first lady.

Pence was at Kansas’ McConnell Air Force Base. Lillian (née Hacker; was her mother. Her father was a United Airlines officer called John M. Batten. When she was a child, her parents split, and her mother married Bernard Barcio in 1967.

However, she grew up in the Broad Ripple Village section of Indianapolis. She also attended Bishop Chatard High School and graduated as valedictorian. Similarly, Pence attended Butler University in neighboring Indianapolis, where she also majored in education and minored in art. Butler University also awarded her a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) and a Master of Science (M.S.) in elementary teaching.

In Indianapolis, Pence taught at John Strange Elementary, Acton Elementary, Fall Creek Elementary, and the Orchard School.

Pence also attended a watercolor painting lesson after the birth of her first kid. This led to a career as a painter of home portraits and old structures. She’s painted up to 35 paintings every year, some on commission and others for sale at local art festivals.

How Did Karen Meet Her Husband?

She met her first husband, John Steven Whitaker, in high school. They married in Brewster County, Texas, on August 4, 1978, and eventually divorced. During their marriage, Whitaker was a medical student.

Karen later met Mike Pence while playing guitar during Mass at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, an Indianapolis Catholic church where they both worshiped. However, they went ice skating at the Indiana State Fairgrounds on their first date.

The couple got engaged in August 1984 after dating for roughly nine months and married on June 8, 1985. They were both Roman Catholics until 1995, when they turned to evangelical Christianity. Michael (served in the United States Marine Corps), Charlotte, and Audrey are the couple’s three children. Pence has resided in Indiana for the most of her life.
