Former Zambian President Edgar Lungu Dies at 67 in South Africa

Former President of Zambia, Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, has sadly passed away. The news was confirmed on Thursday, June 5, 2025, by his daughter, Hon. Tasila Lungu-Mwansa, and the family’s legal representative, Hon. Makebi Zulu.

Dr. Lungu, who was receiving specialized medical care at Mediclinic Medforum Hospital in Pretoria, South Africa, reportedly died after a long illness. He was 67 years old.

Born on November 11, 1957, Edgar Lungu served as Zambia’s sixth Republican President from January 26, 2015, to August 24, 2021. During his tenure, he led the country through major infrastructure projects, economic challenges, and political shifts.

The Patriotic Front, the party he led, released an official statement through Acting President Given Lubinda, confirming the sad news. Further details and funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
