John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has directed the immediate cancellation of fuel allowances and fuel allocations for all political appointees when he assumes office in 2025.

The directive, announced on Monday, July 14, 2025, is part of Mahama’s broader Reset Ghana Agenda aimed at reducing waste, promoting fiscal discipline, and rebuilding confidence in public sector leadership.

A statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications, emphasized the urgency of cutting down on government excess and redirecting national resources to critical sectors.

“The President has directed the immediate cancellation of all fuel allocations and coupons for government officials and political appointees. Leadership must share in the sacrifices expected of the people,” the statement read.

Cost-Cutting Under the Reset Agenda

This move is one of several reforms proposed by Mahama as part of his plan to reset the Ghanaian economy. Other measures include:

  • Reducing the number of presidential staffers.
  • Scrapping DSTV and satellite TV subscriptions in public offices.
  • Eliminating non-essential government spending.

Party Support and Public Reaction

Joyce Bawah Mogtari, a senior aide to Mr. Mahama, described the directive as “refreshing,” adding that the NDC leader is committed to protecting the public purse.
