Kamala Harris was born on October 20, 1964, to a Tamil Indian mother and a Jamaican father in Oakland, California. She was raised in Berkeley, California, and then attended Howard University where she became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She graduated with a degree in political science and economics in 1986. She then graduated from the University of California’s Hastings College of Law in 1989.
Harris began her career as a deputy district attorney in Alameda County from 1990 to 1998. She then worked as a managing attorney of the National Homeownership Project at the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office from 1998 to 2000. Additionally, she served as the district attorney of San Francisco after being elected in 2003 and was re-elected in 2007.
In 2010, Harris won statewide elections to become California’s 32nd attorney general. She then ran for the United States Senate in 2016 and was elected in the same year. As a senator, she served on four committees: Homeland Security and Government Affairs; Intelligence; Budget; and the Environment and Public Works.
