Dissanayake’s platform resonated with many citizens who have been struggling under severe economic conditions, including a foreign exchange shortage that left Sri Lanka unable to import essentials like fuel and medicine. He has vowed to bring immediate reforms, including dissolving parliament within 45 days of taking office to secure a fresh mandate for his policies.
Political analysts view Dissanayake’s win as a continuation of the 2022 protests, which led to the resignation of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. “This election result shows the 2022 uprising is not over. People have voted for change,” said Pradeep Peiris, a political scientist at the University of Colombo.
Despite concerns from investors over Dissanayake’s initial manifesto to slash taxes, which could complicate the IMF’s fiscal targets, he has assured voters that economic changes will be made in consultation with the IMF to ensure the repayment of debt. His approach has been welcomed by many who believe that a balanced recovery is possible under his leadership.
