A forestry student and environmental activist from Ghana, Abubakar Tahiru, has achieved a remarkable feat by setting a new world record for the most trees hugged in one hour.

Abubakar, 29, embraced a staggering total of 1,123 trees at Tuskegee National Forest in Alabama, USA, where he is pursuing his master’s degree in forestry at Auburn University.

Growing up in a farming community in Ghana, Abubakar developed a profound connection with nature, sparking his passion for conservation.

Despite the challenges of fasting for Ramadan during the attempt, he persevered, moving swiftly between trees to ensure each hug met the strict criteria.

With his record-breaking accomplishment, Abubakar aims to further his commitment to forestry by advocating for sustainable practices and collaborating with environmental organizations on impactful projects.

“Not being able to drink water throughout the attempt posed a significant challenge, especially given the physical exertion required,” Abubakar said.

“However, this also proved to be helpful in a way, as there was no need to pause for water breaks, allowing me to continue the attempt uninterrupted from start to finish.”
