Nigerian Afrobeat sensation Rema delivered an unforgettable performance at the 2023 Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris, France, on Monday, October 30, 2023, where football legends gathered to celebrate excellence in the sport.
Rema, a guest performer for the evening, electrified the audience with his rendition of the global hit song “Calm Down” as the crowd enthusiastically cheered him on. The ceremony saw Lionel Messi, the Argentine captain, secure his eighth Ballon d’Or win, extending his record. He triumphed over formidable contenders like Manchester City’s treble-winning Erling Haaland and former PSG teammate Kylian Mbappe.
In his post-victory speech, Messi, who had previously won the FIFA World Cup with Argentina, expressed his gratitude for his remarkable career. Aitana Bonmati claimed the women’s Ballon d’Or after her outstanding performance in Spain’s historic Women’s World Cup victory, where she was named the tournament’s player of the competition.
Additionally, England and Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham was honored with the Kopa Trophy, while his club teammate Vinicius Jr. received the prestigious Socrates prize.
“I couldn’t imagine having the career that I’ve had. Everything that I’ve achieved,” the Inter Miami forward said.
“The fortune I’ve had playing for the best team in the world, the best team in history. It’s nice to win these individual trophies. To win the Copa America and then the World Cup, to get it done is amazing.”
