Francisco Rodriguez, a Cuban native, is a free diver who also goes by the moniker Francisco “Pipin” Ferreras. In addition to his deep-diving accomplishments, the freediver is well-known for his friendship with Audrey Mestre, his ex-wife.
Ferreras is from Matanzas, a city on Cuba’s northern coast. He began free diving at the age of five. The well-known free diver with a professional lineage was given the nickname “Pipin” as a child, to which he later added the surname Ferreras.
The athlete began his aquatic career spearfishing, which was a relatively unknown sport at the time. Pipin, the athlete, was discovered for the first time practicing freediving by a group of Italian visitors vacationing in Cuba at the time. Tourists from various nations in Cuba were eager to see what he could do.
The athlete’s diving fans didn’t have to wait long for him to establish a strong devotion to the sport. It didn’t take him long to realize that while spearfishing and diving for black coral, he was plunging to the same depths as the free diving champions.
