The Chairman of the Trade and Industry Committee of Parliament, Carlos Ahenkorah, has reacted to the e levy saga in Ghana currently by advising Ghanaians who do not want to pay the 1.75 percent e-levy not to use momo again.
According to Carlos Ahenkorah the e- levy that been introduced is not compulsory, and persons who do not want to pay are free not to use mobile money so that they won’t be force to pay the 1.75%.
One of the issues that arose from the reading of the 2022 budget was the tax to be paid for sending money through momo.
This got many Ghanaians and minority rejecting the bill and calling the e levy punitive.
“It is not a compulsory tax, if you don’t do MoMo, you don’t pay. So if you don’t want to pay, don’t do MoMo. It’s simple”.
“What I’m telling them is that they don’t seem to understand what’s going on. Look, if they continue, and government decides that fine, I am not going to charge anymore e-levy, government would have to go and borrow that money, and it becomes me and you our burden to pay. So they should forget about what they’re doing and rather let us see how we can assist government to run this country”.
