Baskin claims that at the age of 14, she was gang raped by three men who lived across the street from her house, and that she had little emotional support from her devout Christian family. She dropped out of high school and moved in with a local roller rink worker. Baskin then hitchhiked from Florida to Bangor, Maine, sleeping under parked automobiles. Later, she bought a Datsun vehicle and slept in the back with her favorite cat.

Baskin became well-known after appearing in the 2020 Netflix real crime documentary series Tiger King, which follows Baskin’s developing rivalry with Oklahoma-based private zoo owner Joe Exotic. Following the series’ debut, Baskin suffered online harassment in response to the third episode of the series, which speculated that Baskin was involved in the disappearance of Don Lewis, her second husband. In a statement on Big Cat Rescue’s website, Baskin rejected these assertions. As a result of Tiger King, her slogan, “Hey all you cool cats and kittens!” became a meme.
