Durante, a Davao native, graduated from the Philippine Military Academy Tanglaw Diwa in 1992. He has a master’s degree in defense analysis from the Naval Postgraduate School in California, USA, and a master’s degree in public management with a concentration in development security from the Development Academy of the Philippines.
Durante, a “full-blooded Scout Ranger,” led the 2nd Scout Ranger Battalion of the 1st Scout Ranger Regiment on Mindanao. In 2003, he received the Cavalier Award for Army Operations from the PMA Alumni Association.
He also served as a military observer for the United Nations mission in Wau, South Sudan, in 2007. Durante was appointed PSG commander on February 24, 2020, during the term of former President Rodrigo Duterte.
He was previously the commanding officer of the PSG’s Presidential Escorts Battalion, which provided immediate security to the president and other VIPs.
Durante claimed responsibility for the unauthorized use of unregistered COVID-19 vaccines in December 2020. The vaccine was administered by themselves to personnel who served as Duterte’s personal bodyguard.
Senator Franklin Drilon, the minority leader at the time, requested that Durante be summoned to explain the unauthorized use of the vaccine. According to an Inquirer.net article, Drilon later stated that inviting Durante was no longer necessary.
According to Philippine Army Chief Lieutenant General Romeo Brawner Jr., both civil and military investigations into Durante and his associates will be conducted concurrently.
He stated that the military will respect Durante’s and other army officers’ legal proceedings. Brawner added that investigations will continue to determine whether the officers under Durante carried out the murder on orders.
