Zlatan Ibrahimovi was born on October 3, 1981, in Malmö, Sweden. His father, “efik Ibrahimovi,” is a Muslim who immigrated to Sweden from Bosnia in 1977. His mother, Jurka Gravi, is a Catholic who immigrated to Sweden from Croatia.
His parents first met there. He was brought up as a Catholic. Ibrahimovi has one sibling and four half-siblings. Although his upbringing was split between his parents following their divorce when he was a young child, Ibrahimovic spent more time with his father as he grew up. At age six, he began playing soccer with several neighborhood clubs. When he was 15 years old, he was on the verge of giving up football and going to work at the Malmö docks, but his coach persuaded him to continue playing.
Malmö acquired Ibrahimovi in 1999. In 2001, he moved to Ajax. Before Ajax was eliminated by A.C. Milan in the Champions League, he scored four goals while playing for the club in the Eredivisie in 2001–2002. His goal against NAC was named “Goal of the Year” in 2004.
Later that year, following allegations from his teammate Rafael van der Vaart that Ibrahimovic had intentionally injured him, he was transferred to Juventus. He received the Guldbollen, an award given to the Swedish football player of the year while playing for Juventus. Later, Ibrahimovi played for Internazionale, Barcelona, A.C. Milan, and Paris Saint-Germain. He declined the opportunity to play for Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina in favor of joining the Swedish national team.
Ibrahimovi, who was named the team’s captain in 2012, has participated in a number of World Cup qualifying matches. Sweden was unable to secure a spot in the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
After tennis player Björn Borg, he was ranked as the second-greatest Swedish athlete of all time in December 2014 by the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter.
He passed Pele as PSG’s all-time leading scorer in October 2015. He joined Manchester United the following year on a free transfer, and in his debut campaign, he took home the FA Community Shield, Football League Cup, and UEFA Europa League.
In 2018, Ibrahimovic became a member of the L.A. Galaxy. He re-joined Milan in 2020. Ten players, including Ibrahimovic, have played 100 or more times for Sweden’s national team. With 62 goals, he is the nation’s all-time leading scorer.
In February 2016, the sports documentary “Becoming Zlatan” was released. Ibrahimovi’s early years with Malmö FF and Ajax as well as the beginning of his career with Juventus in 2005 are all covered in the movie. Several European film festivals have shown the movie.
His deal with AC Milan is set to end in August 2020.
In 2020, after becoming the first player to reach 50 goals for both Milan clubs, he compared himself to Benjamin Button. He said: “I’m like Benjamin Button. I’ve always been young, never old.”
